About Seattle

Located about 100 miles south of the Canadian-United States border, the coastal seaport city of Seattle is one of the fastest growing cities in the United States. The city is located on a narrow isthmus between the saltwater Puget Sound on the west side and Lake Washington on the east side and is home to around 660,000 people. Along with being the largest city in the Pacific Northwest, Seattle is the 9th largest port in North America, and is also a major gateway for trade with Asia. The area was inhabited by Native Americans for at least 4,000 years before the first permanent European settlers arrived, and it was officially named Seattle in 1853 after Chief Si’ahl of the local Duwamish and Suquamish tribes. The city also has a remarkable music history, being the birthplace to rock legend Jimi Hendrix, and famous for groups and artists such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Sir Mix-A-Lot, and Macklemore.
