It was originally considered to be its own town in 1902, but was annexed by Seattle in 1907.The saltwater beach parks along Elliott Bay and Puget Sound, including Alki Beach and Lincoln Park are popular attractions that draw people from all over. King County Metro Transit provides frequent bus service to and from multiple West Seattle districts, allowing for easy transportation within the metropolitan area. West Seattle is home to some well-known people that can be spotted out and about, including Pearl Jam lead singer Eddie Vedder, actress Dyan Cannon, and Amanda Knox.

From picturesque parks to historic theaters to community events, West Seattle offers something for everyone. The popular West Seattle Art Walk is held from 6 to 9 pm on the second Thursday of every month. Merchants from Alki Beach, Admiral, Alaska Junction, Morgan Junction, Fauntleroy, and Delridge districts host the event, showcasing work by local artists. West Seattle also holds a year-round Farmer's Market in the heart of Alaska Junction, offering fresh, local produce and artisanal eats for purchase every Sunday from 10 am to 2 pm.

Alaska Junction - also known as "The Junction" - is West Seattle's liveliest business district and home to a variety of specialty boutiques, art supply stores and galleries, pet stores, and children's stores. To meet your common everyday needs, Westwood Village Shopping Center offers chain department stores such as Target, Pier 1 Imports, Staples, Barnes & Noble, and Bed, Bath & Beyond.
