The Proctor District in Tacoma's North End is a quaint neighborhood known for its tree-lined residential streets, historic buildings, and exceptional retail shops, grocers, and restaurants. The neighborhood is named after architect John G. Proctor, who designed local historical landmarks such as the Nelson Bennett Mansion, the Wheeler Building, and the Pierce County Courthouse. But the principal developer of Tacoma's North End was Allen Chase Mason, who donated the city's first public library, built the first Elks lodge, and developed the first street car line from downtown to Point Defiance Park. He advertised Tacoma as a wonderful place to live, and his memory lives on in the Proctor District's Mason Plaza located next to the Wheelock Public Library.
From outdoor activities to art galleries to bowling, the Proctor District offers many unique attractions. The venerable old Blue Mouse Theatre, built in 1923, is the oldest continuously operating movie theater in Washington State and is open seven days a week. The Blue Mouse celebrated its 90th birthday on November 12, 2013 and has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 2010. Two Saturdays a month, Rocky Horror Picture Show brings in crowds.
Proctor has a thriving business district with a wide range of businesses that attract shoppers from nearby neighborhoods and the surrounding areas.
Proctor offers many dining options, ranging from dive bar diners to savory Italian.
